When should I consider surgery for an enlarged prostate?
When medication isn't helping enough or causes side effects, or when there are problems such as urinary retention, bladder stones, repeated infections, bleeding, or effects on the kidneys.
TURP or Aquablation?
Both remove the tissue that's blocking flow. Aquablation is heat-free and more often preserves ejaculation. The choice depends on the size and shape of your prostate.
What if my prostate is very large?
Robotic simple prostatectomy removes the blocking tissue through small incisions and works well for very large glands.
Will I need a catheter?
Usually for 1 to 3 days after TURP or Aquablation, and about a week after robotic simple prostatectomy.
Will it affect my erections?
New erection problems are uncommon after these procedures. Changes in ejaculation are more common, especially after TURP.
