GETTING STARTED

Your First Visit

Two kinds of first visits

Most patients come in for a new concern. Others are looking for a second opinion or a revision of earlier surgery. The visit works the same way for both; second opinions simply need more records.

For a new concern

You'll fill out an intake form ahead of time or when you arrive. A nurse or physician assistant on my team will go over your history and symptoms, and may start simple tests such as a urine test, a flow test, or a bladder scan. Then I'll see you myself. I'll review everything, examine you, explain what's going on, and we'll decide on a plan together. You won't leave without seeing me, and there's always time for your questions.

Why a team approach

My team gathers the details so that our time together goes to what matters most: understanding the problem and deciding what to do about it. Every plan is made by me, with you.

For a second opinion or revision

The visit follows the same steps, with extra time for your history. Because the details of earlier surgery matter, we'll need your records: operative notes and, depending on the problem, retrograde urethrograms, cystoscopy reports, renograms, CT scans, or implant information. The Second Opinions page has the full list.

What to bring

Photo ID and insurance card. A list of your medications, including blood thinners. Records and imaging from prior care. For urinary problems, a 2 to 3 day bladder diary (times and amounts) if you can. Your questions, written down. A partner or family member is always welcome.

In person or by video

Visits are in person in Garden City, NY, or by video. Video works well for second opinions and follow-ups. Some problems need an exam or in-office testing, which we'll plan together.
