While penile implants are a highly successful, long-term solution for erectile dysfunction, complications can occasionally occur. As a sub-specialized reconstructive practice, we specialize in evaluating and managing these complex device issues. Complications typically involve mechanical malfunctions over years of use (such as a fluid leak or pump failure), erosion or migration of components, or a localized device infection. Correcting these challenges requires expert reconstructive expertise to safely manage tissue health and, when appropriate, restore functional device utility.

Primary Symptoms

  • Mechanical Failure: Complete loss of fluid pressure, an inability to pump the device to full stiffness, or an inability to deflate the cylinders cleanly.

  • Device Infection: New, localized pain, persistent redness, swelling of the scrotum or shaft, or fluid drainage near the surgical sites.

  • Anatomical Shift or Pain: Feeling a component shifting out of place, cylinder reshaping, or experiencing new discomfort during device activation.

Diagnostic Approach

  1. Targeted Physical Palpation: Specialist examination to manually trace the cylinders, reservoir, and pump system to check for component integrity and tissue erosion.

  2. High-Resolution Imaging: Utilizing specialized ultrasound or CT scans to visually verify the internal position, alignment, and fluid volumes of the implant components.
