TURP and Aquablation: Recovery and Catheter Care

The first days

  • Most men go home with a catheter for 1 to 3 days.
  • Keep the bag below your bladder, secure the tubing to your thigh, and clean where the catheter enters twice a day.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to keep the urine light pink or clear.

The first weeks

  • Burning, urgency, frequent urination, and getting up at night are common for several weeks while the prostate heals.
  • Blood in the urine can come and go. Around 2 to 3 weeks, the healing surface can shed and cause a short burst of bleeding. Rest and drink more fluids.
  • Avoid straining. Use a stool softener.
  • No heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or sex for about 2 to 4 weeks, or as I advise.

Ejaculation

Many men have less or no fluid with orgasm after TURP (retrograde ejaculation). It's harmless but permanent. Aquablation preserves ejaculation in most men.
