CLINICAL SUBSPECIALTY FOCUS · RECONSTRUCTIVE UROLOGY
Repeated dilations often lead to the stricture coming back. Imaging maps the scar, and urethroplasty offers a more durable repair.
ENDOSCOPIC LIMITATIONS
Repeated Dilation & DVIU
Stretching or cutting the scar from inside can cause small tears that heal with more scar. Each repeat procedure is less likely to work.

PREFERRED FOR SHORT STRICTURES
Excision & Primary Anastomosis (EPA)
For short bulbar strictures (usually under 2 cm), removing the scar and rejoining the healthy ends gives a durable repair in most men.

COMPLEX GRAFT RECONSTRUCTION
Buccal Mucosa Graft (BMG)
For long or penile strictures, harvesting a thin oral graft from the inner cheek creates a durable, non-hair-bearing new urinary lumen that resists stricture recurrence.

Day Surgery / Outpatient
Urethroplasty (EPA & BMG)
Open reconstruction that can end the cycle of repeat dilations and catheters.

Will a stricture go away on its own?
No. Scar tissue doesn't resolve by itself. Stretching or cutting it can relieve symptoms for a while, but the narrowing usually comes back.
How big an operation is urethroplasty?
It's usually done through an incision between the scrotum and the anus, or through the penis for strictures further out. Many men go home the same day or the next morning.
Will I need a catheter afterward?
Yes, usually for about 2 to 3 weeks. Before it comes out, an X-ray dye test confirms the repair has healed.
Will it affect my erections?
Most men notice no lasting change. Some have temporary changes while healing. We'll talk about your specific risk based on where the stricture is and how long it is.
How much time off work will I need?
About 1 to 2 weeks for desk work, longer for physical jobs. You can walk and do light activity right away.
