Penile chordee is a congenital condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the penis, most visible during an erection. Unlike Peyronie's disease, which develops later in life due to acquired scar tissue, chordee is present from birth. It is caused by an asymmetry in the development of the penile tissues, where a short or inelastic band of skin, tissue, or the urethra itself pulls on the anatomy, forcing a downward or lateral bend.
Primary Symptoms
Congenital Curvature: A visible downward or sideways bend or tethering of the penis during an erection that has been present since childhood.
Mechanical Discomfort: Physical tightness or tension felt along the shorter underside of the penis during an erection.
Difficulty with Intimacy: As physical maturation occurs, severe curvature can make comfortable or stable penetration challenging or painful for both partners.
Diagnostic Approach
Visual and Physical Inspection: A comprehensive clinical assessment to check for tissue tethering, tethered skin, and structural alignment.
Artificial Erection Assessment: Evaluating the exact angles of the curvature, which can be reviewed via patient photographs or during surgical planning to ensure precise reconstructive tethering release.
