What shockwave therapy is
Coming soon to the practice. Low-intensity shockwave therapy uses gentle sound-wave pulses applied to the penis. The goal is to encourage new blood vessel growth and better blood flow. It’s done in the office, with no needles, no numbing, and no downtime.

Who it may help
Men with mild to moderate erection problems from reduced blood flow, often those who get a partial response from pills. It is less likely to help when erection problems are severe or come from nerve damage after prostate surgery. An exam and a review of your history come first.

What a course looks like
A course is a series of short office sessions, usually once or twice a week over several weeks. The number of sessions is decided together at your visit.

What a session is like
You lie back while a small handheld probe is moved along the shaft. Most men feel a tapping sensation rather than pain. A session takes about 20 minutes, and you can drive home and go back to work right after.

What results to expect
Any improvement builds gradually over the weeks after a course. Results vary, and some men notice little change. You can keep using pills during and after treatment.

Side effects and safety
Side effects are uncommon and usually mild: brief soreness, redness, or small bruises. Mention it if you take blood thinners or already have a penile implant, since shockwave therapy isn’t used over an implant.

How it fits with other options
Shockwave therapy doesn’t rule anything out. Pills, injections, and a penile implant all remain options, and you can move to them at any point.

Where the evidence stands
Studies so far are mixed, and the American Urological Association still considers shockwave therapy investigational. It is offered as an option for the right patient, not as a replacement for proven treatments, and you’ll get an honest opinion on whether it’s worth trying in your case.

Cost and insurance

Common questions
Does it hurt? Most men describe a tapping feeling. No numbing is needed.
Does it help Peyronie’s disease? It is sometimes used for pain during erections, but it doesn’t straighten a curve.
When will I know if it worked? Usually within a few months after the last session, checked at a follow-up visit.
